The name 'Newington' comes from the Anglo-Saxon (AD400-1066) 'Neweton' or New Town. That in itself suggests there was once an old town and an excavation in 2018-2019 has now proven that there was a busy industrial town here in the late Iron Age that grew during the Roman period (AD43-400)
